In a significant move to boost tourism and economic ties, Malaysia has announced the extension of its 30-day visa-free entry policy for Indian nationals until December 31, 2026.
This decision is part of Malaysia’s broader visa liberalization efforts, designed to support the nation’s tourism growth and economic development ahead of its Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and its ASEAN chairmanship in 2025.
Saravana Kumar Kumaravasagam, the Consul General of Malaysia in Chennai, described the policy extension as a “golden opportunity” for Indian travelers.
“This initiative allows people from Tamil Nadu and across India to explore Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage, pristine beaches, and vibrant cities without the hassle of applying for a visa,” he remarked.
Record Tourist Numbers in 2024
Data from the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (Tourism Malaysia) highlights a record-breaking year for Indian arrivals in 2024.
From January to November, Malaysia welcomed over one million Indian tourists, a 47% increase compared to the pre-pandemic period of 2019 and an impressive 71.7% growth over 2023.
Tourism Malaysia attributed this surge to the visa-free entry policy, which was first implemented in 2023. The policy facilitated easier access for Indian tourists, contributing to Malaysia’s strong recovery in the tourism sector.
Expanded Connectivity Boosts Travel
The rise in Indian tourist numbers has been further supported by expanded air connectivity. In 2024, new routes from India were introduced, including daily direct flights by Indigo Airlines to Penang and Langkawi, complementing existing services to Kuala Lumpur.
Focus on Visit Malaysia Year 2026
The upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign aims to capitalize on this momentum, targeting increased tourist arrivals and revenue. The campaign is part of Malaysia’s strategic efforts to enhance its global tourism competitiveness and elevate the sector’s contribution to the nation’s GDP.
A Commitment to Strengthen India-Malaysia Tourism Links
The visa-free entry policy extension underscores Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening tourism ties with India, a key source market.
As the two nations continue to foster closer cultural and economic connections, this policy is expected to drive further growth in visitor numbers and solidify Malaysia’s reputation as a top travel destination for Indian tourists.
With its scenic landscapes, diverse attractions, and simplified travel processes, Malaysia is poised to attract even more Indian travelers in the coming years.
